What did we learn from our learning pathway pilot?

Last year we launched our learning pathway, designed to take you on a journey through our key adult safeguarding learning resources.

Alongside the pathway, we also launched our learning pathway workbook. Knowing that not everybody has the same learning style, we wanted to trial printed versions of the workbook as well as the digital versions we had available. But, given that this comes at a cost, we were keen to trial it on a small scale. We convinced four of our wonderful West Sussex care providers to go on the journey with us, and to pilot our learning pathway and our printed workbooks. At the end of 2025 we asked our pilot participants to complete a feedback survey about their experience. So, how did they get on, and what did they think?

Spoiler alert: they loved it!

78% of respondents to our survey* said that they were ‘very likely’ to recommend the learning pathway to a colleague, with remaining 22% being ‘Quite likely’. Furthermore, 89% of respondents said that the quality of the learning resources in the pathway are ‘excellent’. What a result! We were thrilled to hear that our learning resources are landing well with workers at the forefront of working with adults with care and support needs. Having recently overhauled our learning resources, it’s great to know that we’re heading in the right direction, and promoting good practice in the adult health and social care sector. After all, one of our key purposes is to assure ourselves that safeguarding practice is continuously improving and enhancing the quality of life of adults in West Sussex.

What did they say?

Amongst the responses we heard that the learning pathway is ‘a very good tool for the staff who are new, and for the ones working in the social care sector’. We were told that the pathway ‘enabled [the] team to gain more knowledge about the West Sussex safeguarding team and how the system works. [The team] have learned a lot about how to maintain safety of residents and how to raise concerns’. And perhaps my favourite was that ‘the pathway reinforced safe, respectful, and person-centred care, helping me feel more confident in supporting residents effectively’.

Where do we go from here?

We’re not done yet, though. Over the next few months you will notice some changes to our website, which will hopefully improve the navigation around our site, making it easier for you to find what you need. This will include the learning pathway. Furthermore, since more than half of our pilot volunteers told us that a printed workbook was their preferred format for our learning pathway workbook, you can watch this space for future releases of these.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our pilot volunteers for their engagement throughout this process, and for their fantastic feedback.
